In short, they are reported to increase the growth of intestinal epithelial cells, enhance intestinal barrier function, influence immune cell development and populations in the gut-associated lymphoid tissue, exert anti-inflammatory and potentially T H 1 promoting and/or T H 2 inhibiting effects on various intestinal immune cells, and modify the abundance of gut microbiota that might play a role in allergic sensitization (Figure 1)
